There are a ton of different self tanners on the market today. Lotions, foams, sprays – Gradual and Instant. To make sure that you achieve the tan that you want in the time you want, here are some options to consider when purchasing your self tanner.
Instant Self Tanners come in several different forms, but they all contain DHA. DHA is the active ingredient in all Sunless Tanners. Your tan will begin to develop within hours. If you are tanning for a particular event, like a wedding or a girls night out, it is best to apply 2-3 days before the event. This way your tan has time to develop and you can make any adjustments as needed.
Every self tanner has instructions that are unique to that product, and you should always follow those instructions to achieve the best results. Regardless of what product you use, you will always need to exfoliate prior to applying and always have a tanning mitt close by, even if it is just for blending.
Spray / Mist – Sprays and mist generally come in an aerosol form and are easy to apply. A tanning mitt can be used to blend any spots that may get over-saturated. A big benefit of this kind of application is that you can reach some of those hard-to-reach places like your back. They generally take less time to apply and dry quicker than lotions and mousses. Many of them contain a bronzer (aka color guide) that shows where you have already sprayed to avoid over doing it.
Mousses – A Self Tanning Mousse is generally a light weight, dark-colored formula that should be applied with a tanning mitt. After squeezing a modest amount into the mitt, you will rub in the formula using a circular motion, starting with your legs first. In our experience we have found these products to produce the darkest results.
Gel – The Gel is used in the same way the mousse is, but unlike the mousse, the gel is clear so you will not have a color-guide to see where you have already applied. There is less DHA in our gel so any mistakes will not be very noticeable. The most important thing to remember with the Sjolie Bronze Fusion Gel is that a little goes a long way.
Gradual Tanners are applied regularly and are great for providing the skin with nutrients and moisturizers while building a natural-looking, subtle tan over time. They also contain DHA, but not as much as the regular self tanners. With gradual tanners you do not have to worry about over-doing it or noticeable streaks appearing. We offer a great selection of these products in lotion and mist form.
Lotions – Apply to clean skin the same way that you would apply regular lotion. Although it is not necessary to use a tanning mitt when applying, be sure to wash your hands when you are finished. The amount of times a gradual tanner must be used to produce a tan varies. With the Sjolie Skin Perfecting Lotion, we have seen the quickest results. And again, these lotions are great for nourishing your skin daily.
Mists – Apply the Mist from head to toe when you get out of the shower and wait a few minutes before putting on clothes or make-up – and that’s it! Fast and easy with no mess. Use a tanning mitt or towel to blot any excess spray. This is a wonderful way to hydrate your skin also.
If you are new to the self tanning game, remember:
Exfoliate your skin before applying.
Moisturize your skin on the days following to prolong the life of your tan.
Make sure to follow the directions stated on the bottle.
Always use a Tanning Mitt when applying an instant tanner.
Give your tan time to develop before adding another coat.
Self tanners do NOT protect your skin from the sun.
